Few treasures from the high desert mountains are more precious than Turquoise. This necklace combines a treasure of the earth with a gemmoid from the organic world. (Pearls, whether natural or cultured, are organics and belong to the handful of jewelry¬†grade materials that are known as gemmoids rather than gems. The loosely affiliated group of “gemmoids” includes Opal and Jet.) Until a few generations ago “cultured pearls” –pearls grown with the assistance or interference of humans– were a whisper rather than a reality. The Japanese eventually developed effective –although very labor intensive– methods to basically “farm raise” pearls in the late 1890s. Until the 1990s however, very few people ever saw a pearl larger than 10mm. The pearls that grace this necklace are shell nucleated cultured freshwater Pearls, each one is nearly 13mm. Asymmetric semi Baroques rather than perfect rounds. The nacre displays, in places, the near rippled appearance common in larger Baroque pearls. They also display the hint of “Orient” that is more beautiful than perfect symmetry. (In a pearl “Orient” is the term we use to describe that faint shimmer of lavender, blush, or green visible when we roll the pearl from side to side in our hands.) All natural gemmy blue Turquoise from Pilot Mountain –a Nevada Mine– is interspersed with these extra large Freshwater Cultured Pearls. Truly a one of a kind necklace that combines the elegant and wild. Finished with a 14k gold ball clasp.
